Géographies de Fernand VERGER : l'environnement comme horizon

Fernand VERGER, Professor emeritus at the École Normale Supérieure, had a very rich carrier as a teacher and as a researcher. From his PhD thesis in physical geography to his role of scientific expert at the French Conservatoire du littoral, the way he works illustrates the paradigm changes in the field of geography.
Fernand VERGER is a pioneer in the use of new technologies in geography. As a research project leader involved in cooperation with the NASA he introduces remote sensing as well as the use of space-borne data, and he also encourages the use of Geographic Information Systems as a method for geographical data analysis and as an instrument for development. Even if he studied in the framework of the classical geography which clearly distinguishes physical and human approaches, Fernand VERGER always tried to maintain the balance of both perspectives in the field of geography. He considers physical phenomena being strongly linked to human land use.
As a specialist of coastal wetlands and as a researcher constantly concerned by human-environment interaction, Fernand VERGER was called to apply as an expert in many projects as the Mont-Saint-Michel Bay reshaping.
This work retraces Fernand VERGER carrier in parallel with the evolutions of geography in the second part of the XXth Century. It also expresses some kind of surprise when facing some of the changes which occurred in this field.
Fernand VERGER, Professeur émérite à l'École Normale Supérieure, a eu une carrière très riche d'enseignant et de chercheur. De sa thèse en géographie physique à son rôle d'expert scientifique au Conservatoire du littoral, l'évolution de sa pratique de la géographie illustre les changements de paradigme de la discipline.
Fernand VERGER est un pionnier de l'utilisation des nouvelles technologies en géographie. Il introduit la télédétection et l'utilisation de données spatiales en portant des projets de recherche avec la NASA, et il encourage l'utilisation des systèmes d'information géographique comme méthode d'analyse des données géographiques et comme instrument au service du développement. Formé à l'école classique de la géographie qui distinguait clairement les approches physiques et humaines, Fernand VERGER a néanmoins toujours souhaité garder un équilibre entre ces deux pans de la discipline. Il considère que les phénomènes physiques sont intimement liés à l'occupation de l'espace par les hommes.
Sa spécialisation dans le domaine des zones humides littorales et sa préoccupation constante pour les interactions homme-milieu ont amené Fernand VERGER à participer en tant qu'expert à de nombreux projets, comme le réaménagement de la Baie du Mont-Saint-Michel.
Cet ouvrage retrace la carrière de Fernand VERGER en la mettant en parallèle des évolutions de la géographie dans la seconde moitié du XXème siècle. Il exprime également un étonnement face à certains changements.
