TEN-T Projects in their Geo-Economic Context: a Case Study of the Trade Shape of the Spanish Mediterranean Railway Corridor
Résumé
The Mediterranean Railway Corridor (MRC) as a TEN-T project is a topic of debate for different kinds of political, economic and institutional actors as well as for the civil society. The discourses of the main stakeholders in favour of the MRC are mainly based on freight data arguments: the Mediterranean axis is the main freight axis in Spain; it has strong trade links with the European countries… The aim of this paper is to analyse the trade data of the Spanish Mediterranean provinces and to integrate them in a Geographical Information System in order to assess the arguments of the stakeholders and to discuss the relevance of the different proposed routes for the MRC. Therefore, it will use Datacomex – the data base of the Spanish Ministry of Economy as a main source. It will highlight the importance of a freight axis towards the main European economies but it will also demonstrate that all the arguments used in order to support the MRC project are not relevant.
